I want to run a business out of a small building on my property. How can that be illegal?
Question: I want to run a business out of a small building on my property, but my friend says that it would be illegal to do so. How can that be illegal?
Response by Andreana Pentaris: Running a business out of your residential property can be illegal due to your local zoning laws. If you are completely serious about starting this business without a retail commercial property, then you should go to city hall or your local zoning office and check out the zoning maps. This will give you an indication of what you are allowed to have on your land. Also, if you have any trouble understanding the maps then you should contact a local property law attorney who can help you read and understand the zoning maps for your area.
